The ALTENER programme: Renewable Energy entering the 21st Century
Renewable energy sources currently meet only around 6% of the European Union's energy needs. The European Commission believes, however, that renewables have the potential to contribute about 15% of the Union's primary energy demand by 2010. The ALTENER programme (1993-1997) is one of the Commission's responses to the challenge of meeting that target.
ALTENER has, in its three years of operation to date, financed numerous activities, including: a range of studies on sectoral strategies and technical standards, a variety of events and more than 225 projects. The conference is intended to provide a forum for taking stock of the programme's results to date and proposing new directions and activities for the follow-up programme - ALTENER II.
The event is aimed at all major actors in the renewable energy sector including: high-level policy makers, utilities, industries, financial institutions, European and international organizations, and present and potential ALTENER contractors and supporters.
