The Community's ALTENER programme for the promotion of renewable energy sources will be the focus of a conference, entitled " The ALTENER programme: Renewable Energy entering the 21st Century", which will be held in Sitges (Barcelona), Spain, from 25-27 November 1996. The conference is being organized, on behalf of the European Commission (DG XVII), by the Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Conservation of Energy (IDAE) and the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN), in collaboration with the European Energy Network.

Renewable energy sources currently meet only around 6% of the European Union's energy needs. The European Commission believes, however, that renewables have the potential to contribute about 15% of the Union's primary energy demand by 2010. The ALTENER programme (1993-1997) is one of the Commission's responses to the challenge of meeting that target.

ALTENER has, in its three years of operation to date, financed numerous activities, including: a range of studies on sectoral strategies and technical standards, a variety of events and more than 225 projects. The conference is intended to provide a forum for taking stock of the programme's results to date and proposing new directions and activities for the follow-up programme - ALTENER II.

The event is aimed at all major actors in the renewable energy sector including: high-level policy makers, utilities, industries, financial institutions, European and international organizations, and present and potential ALTENER contractors and supporters.
