A multidisciplinary forum on electronic records will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 18-20 December 1996. The forum is being jointly hosted by the European Union's Member States and the European Commission (Secretariat-General and DG XII - Science, research and development).

The forum will bring together specialists and executives involved in the management of information flow and electronic records (public administrations, archivists, industry suppliers, researchers). The debate will focus on possibilities for wider cooperation, within the framework of the European Union, with regard to the management, storage, conservation and retrieval of electronic records.

The objective of the forum is to prepare a set of guidelines for best practice in the field of electronic records and to investigate possibilities for wider cooperation in this area both between Member States and at Community level. The forum will consist of plenary sessions and parallel working party meetings.

Issues to be addressed by the conference include:

- Multidisciplinary aspects of electronic documents;
- Concept of lifecycle of electronic documents;
- Information flow/work flow;
- Relationship between creators, users and custodians of information.

Three parallel sessions will address the topics: conception, creation and management of electronic documents; short- and long-term preservation, integrity and evident value; information access and use. The results of these sessions will be presented at the closing session of the conference.

The forum will be opened by Mr. David Williamson, Secretary-General of the European Commission. Keynote addresses will be given by a representative of DG XII (Science, research and development) of the European Commission and by Mr. Denis O'Leary, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the European Union.
