The European section of the French National Association for Technical Research (ANRT-Europe), an associate member of the European network of Innovation Relay Centres, is organizing a conference on the future of European research under the Community's new Fifth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. The conference, "Quelles recherches pour l'Europe", will take place in Paris, France, on 9-10 January 1997.

The preparation of the Fifth Framework Programme, presently schedules to run from 1998 to 2002, has provided an opportunity to re-examine certain aspects of the research policy of the European Union. The conference aims to give participants a first insight into the points of view and intentions of the European institutions for the five years of the programme.

High-level representatives from various sectors of the European Commission will present their views on the prospects offered by the Fifth Framework Programme and how this will affect European research. Speakers will include:

- Overview of the Fifth Framework Programme:
. Mr. Jorma Routti, Director General of DG XII - Science, research and development;

- Life resources and the ecosystem:
. Mr. Bruno Hansen, Director of DG XII/E (Life sciences);
. Mr. Christian Paterman, Director of DG XII/D (Environment);

- Information Society:
. Mr. Thierry Van der Pyl, Head of Unit in DG III/F (ESPRIT programme - Information Technologies);
. Mr. Michel Richonnier, Director of DG XIII/C (Telematics Applications);

- Competitive and lasting growth:
. Mr. Ezio Andreta, Director of DG XII/F (Energy);
. Mr. Arturo Garcia-Arroyo, Director of DG XII/C (Industrial and Materials Technologies);

- The international role of European research:
. Mr. Pietro Paolo Merolla, Head of Unit in DG III/A (Industrial policy);
. Mr. Louis Bellemin, Head of Unit in DG XII/B (Cooperation with third countries and international organizations);

- The human potential:
. Mr. Achilleas Mitsos, Director of DG XII/G (Human capital and mobility and targeted socio-economic research);

- Innovation and participation of SMEs:
. Mr. Guilio Grata, Director of DG XIII/D (Dissemination and exploitation of the results of RTD activities, technology transfer and innovation).

Mr. Alain Pompidou, Member of the European Parliament and President of the Scientific and Technological Options Assessment programme of the European Parliament (STOA) will present the views of the European Parliament.

In addition, two parallel sessions will address issues relating to: the implementation of projects financed by the European Union; and the appropriation, dissemination and exploitation of research results.
