The Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Marine Science and technology (MAST III) is planning to hold a MAST workshop on "Project Data Management". The workshop, which will be organized in collaboration with the Institute for Space Applications (part of the Joint Research Centre), will take place in Ispra, Italy, from 11 to 13 June 1997.

The main objective of the workshop is to discuss experiences in implementing project data management in RTD-projects. Scientific, technical, managerial and IT-engineering aspects of project data management will be discussed.

The workshop will be structured according to three issues which determine the nature of data management in RTD-projects:

- Project data management is an end-to-end process which starts with the design of the measurement programme, or gathering of existing data sets, and which ends with the public access to the comprehensive, quality-controlled and fully documented data set of the project;

- Project data management is a value adding activity which helps to maximize the return on investment made in an RTD-project by providing the foundation for multiple purpose use of project data sets;

- Project data management is a specialized scientific activity carried out within a framework of existing national and international policies, of established national and international infrastructures (such as national data centres and international programmes), and of a mature state of the art.

Participation at the workshop will be limited. A restricted number of speakers will be invited by MAST on the basis of the quality of the proposed contributions. The workshop is however open to scientists working outside MAST. It is planned to publish the contributions to the workshop after peer review. Proposals for oral or poster presentations should be submitted before 31 January 1997.
