The European Parliament's Committee on Research, Technological Development and Energy is to hold a public hearing on "Research for Europe: From the Fourth to the Fifth EC Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration" on 15 April 1997, in Brussels.

The hearing is being held in the context of the Committee's examination of the Commission's formal proposal for the Fifth Framework Programme, due to be adopted in the next few days. The views expressed at the hearing, from researchers with industrial and academic backgrounds, will inform debate within the Committee. They will also be taken into account by the rapporteur, Mrs. Godelieve Quisthoudt-Rowohl, the German Christian Democrat MEP drafting the Committee's report on the proposal.

The hearing will be addressed by Mrs. Edith Cresson, Commissioner responsible for research, who will present the Commission's proposal. Viscount Etienne Davignon, who chaired the recent five-year review of Community research programmes, will present the conclusions drawn from the assessment. Other sessions will address the following topics:

- Competitiveness and promotion of RTD - Industry's view;
- Innovative financial instruments and the Fifth Framework Programme;
- Academic and basic research - The views of universities and research institutes.

CORDIS, the Community's R&D Information Service, will have a stand at the hearing, where the "Fifth Framework Focus" World Wide Web service will be presented. This service provides a comprehensive news service on developments in the process of the adoption of the Fifth Framework Programme.
