A SPRINT conference in Luxembourg (5-6 May 1992) will examine strategies to achieve sucess when setting up a science park. It will also allow evaluation of the impact of SPRINT's Science Park Consultancy Scheme.

The gathering of invited science park promoters, experts, political decision makers and those responsible within the European institutions aims to establish a closer understanding of the needs and expectations of science parks within the Community, faced with the challenges between now and the the year 2000.

Some 200 science/technology parks now exist throughout the Member States, playing an increasing role at the interface between local development, research, innovation and technology transfer. To help promoters improve their design and planning, the Commission introduced the Consultancy Scheme in 1990. Under this initiative, a Community-wide register of about 100 consultants was created, making available a great breadth of expertise and relevant experience. Calls for expressions of interest were addressed to science park promoters wishing to use the services of an expert panel to advise them on the main features of their development. As a result, 52 SPRINT supported science park study projects are presently under contract or being negotiated. The extent of the response may result in the call being renewed at the end of 1992.
