A conference entitled "Climate change and the future of the European energy industry: looking ahead to Kyoto" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 6 November 1997. The conference is organized by "European Voice", and sponsored by a number of European energy companies and organizations.

The aim of the conference is to address the problems Europe faces in maintaining its energy supplies while fulfilling its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There will be keynote speeches from the Commissioners at the centre of European policy debate in these two areas: Ritt Bjerregaard (environment) and Christos Papoutsis (energy). Other speeches will look at:

- The costs and benefits of different forms of energy;
- The situation in the Central and Eastern European countries;
- The need to ensure European action is matched in third countries;
- Ensuring consumers do not suffer in the drive to green energy sources;
- The issues facing the Kyoto Summit on climate change in December.
