A conference, European Day and "summer school" on electronic imaging and the visual arts in Europe and Japan, EVA'98 Gifu-Japan, will take place in Gifu City, Japan, from 6 to 10 April 1998. The event is part of the EVA series of conferences and workshops supported by the European Commission through the ESPRIT programme.

The central theme of the event will be European Union and Japanese collaboration in the field of electronic imaging and the visual arts. Specific topics to be addressed will include:

- Societal issues and needs, especially education;
- High quality imaging and access (2D, 3D and VR);
- Advanced broadband multimedia technology and applications;
- Strategies towards the cultural Information Society, including digital archives and cultural electronic commerce.
