The ninth international conference on "Database and Expert Systems Applications", DEXA'98, will take place from 24 to 28 August 1998, in Vienna, Austria. A sister conference, BASYS'98, on "Information Technology for Balanced Automation Systems in Manufacturing" will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 26 to 28 August 1998.

The conference takes place one week before the 15th World Computer Congress of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), in Vienna, Austria, and Budapest, Hungary, from 31 August to 4 September 1998.

The aim of DEXA'98 is to present research contributions in the area of data and expert systems, and to present a large spectrum of applications, which are either already implemented or just being developed. This conference will offer the opportunity to discuss requirements, problems and solutions in the field. It should also encourage dialogue between developers in practice, users of databases and expert systems and scientists.

Workshops will address the following topics:

- Verification, validation and integrity issues in expert and database systems;
- Query processing and multimedia issues in distributed systems;
- Natural language and information systems;
- Data warehouse design and OLAP technology;
- Security and integrity of data-intensive applications;
- Storage and retrieval issues in image and multimedia databases;
- Mobility in databases and distributed systems;
- Network-based information systems;
- Coordination technologies for information systems;
- Workshop for legal information systems;
- Business process reengineering and supporting technologies for electronic commerce;
- Parallel databases: innovative applications and new architectures;
- Workflow management;
