The fifth international conference on the "Biogeochemistry of trace elements" will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 11 to 15 July 1999. The conference will be supported by the Universität für Bodenkultur, Austria, and the Soil Science Society of America.

Biogeochemistry has developed into an interdisciplinary science, linking phenomena observed in the biosphere to physical and chemical reactions in the lithosphere. This conference is dedicated to the exploration and discussion of contemporary and emerging issues in the field, and will provide a forum for professionals, regulators and students to present their most recent findings and to discuss new methodologies, analytical techniques, and process development.

The conference organizers are currently inviting submissions of papers for presentation during the conference. Topics should cover important aspects of fundamental research such as kinetics and mechanisms of the fate of trace elements, including radionuclides in soils and related ecosystems, and methods for their assessment.

Papers on the role of biological and chemical interactions and latest trends and applications in trace element research are also welcomed, focusing in particular on trace element issues in developing countries, and new environmentally sound technologies, such as stabilization and bioremediation of trace-element polluted environments.
