To underline the importance of intermodal freight transport, the final conference on the European Commission's IMPULSE (Interoperable Modular Pilot Plants Underlying Logistic System in Europe) project will be held in Brussels on 16 and 17 June 1999. This event is being supported by the European Commission, DG VII.

According to the organisers, ERRI (European Rail Research Institute), intermodal freight transport has not fully produced the required expectations with respect to growth of volume and net coverage in recent years. Therefore, the IMPULSE project aims to investigate, develop and test technical and organisational measures to improve intermodal transport, and to demonstrate their impact.

The seminar will aim to show how faster handling and automated operations can open up additional volume in medium distance services.
