The Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS) will hold its annual meeting from 26 to 29 January 2009 in Zurich, Switzerland.

The meeting, which will focus on 'Urban futures: the challenge of sustainability' offers a forum to all those concerned about our urban future, from academia to industry and public administration. The programme includes keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, posters and an exhibition.

By 2050, it is estimated that over six billion people, three-quarters of the world's population, will live in cities. The question at the heart of the meeting is: Can this demographic change be harnessed to ensure progress towards sustainability? The AGS proposes that cities, if properly managed, can be transformative arenas in which natural resources are used more efficiently and economically, contributing to a high quality of life for everyone. In addition, the organisation says that 'reinventing cities offers one of the most effective ways of reducing human impact upon the environment and achieving greater sustainability.'For further information, please visit:
