Engineers in contact mechanism are concerned with the stress and deformation that may arise when the surface of two solid bodies are brought into contact. Contact problems in general are very complicated to model numerically and theoretically as the surface is usually the most important part of any engineering component. Structural components fail by wear, corrosion, high cycle fatigue, etc. They are affected and initiated by surface conditions. Consequently, an appropriate approach is needed to modify the surface layers of the base-metal in contact, so as to provide an enhanced performance. However, in many cases it is the combination of effects, e.g. of wear and corrosion, that is causing the damage. This makes the field of surface engineering even more complex and challenging.
The conference will be a forum for scientists and engineers to exchange new ideas that deal with fundamental and applied concepts on surface and contact engineering.
