A seminar on "Perspectives of geochemical barriers in groundwater remediation" will take place in Ispra, Italy, on 30 October 1997. The event is one of the series of Blue Seminars, organized by the Environment Institute of the Commission's Joint Research Centre.

Currently the most common method for groundwater remediation is "pump and treat", however due to a number of factors, this has not proved to be successful in many cases. One of the most promising alternative remediation methods is that based on the concept of "geochemical barriers". The geochemical barrier may be defined as a natural or artificial subsurface zone in which contaminants are immobilized or degraded in situ, abiotically or by micro-organisms, under favourable Eh-pH conditions.

The seminar will explore the perspectives and limitations of artificial geochemical barriers as a tool for groundwater remediation.
