The European Commission, DG XVI, has published an amended invitation to tender for a study on the regional and territorial aspects of developments in the Danube countries relating to the European Community. The invitation to tender was originally published on 16 July 1996 (OJ No S 135 of 16.7.1996 p. 29), and a notice of intention to publish a corrigendum was published on 13 August 1996 (OJ No S 155 of 13.8.1996 p. 34). The European Community (EC) is paying increasing attention to the potential and problems of development in the EC but also in its neighbouring countries. Studies have already been, or are being, carried out for macro-regions of the Community itself and for the Baltic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea regions. The present study will concentrate on territorial aspects of the Danube Space (DS) with particular interest for EC and Danubian regions. For the DS, the fundamental options must be made clear in order to assess the implications of its conceivable alternative futures and to establish foundations for the countries' future cooperation within their space and with the EC. The wish to join the EC has been clearly expressed by most of the non-member DS-countries. Future accession can be assumed to be the main element of orientation for the transnational cooperation scenarios in the region. The purpose of the study is to lay the ground for a better understanding of development challenges, opportunities and requirements in a transnational context of the DS, with particular attention given to regional aspects with a medium-term perspective. In general, the study must be orientated towards the goal of stabilizing development in the area as a crucial contribution to stability and peace in Europe. The consultant will be called upon to: - I. Provide a sufficiently disaggregated and consistent framework of regionalized, inter-regionally and internationally compatible information of a basic nature; - II. Identify and analyse territorial aspects of the impact of developments in the DS for the EC; - III. Establish a quantitative scenario of most probable future development paths for a transnational framework of development strategies by the DS for the middle-term up to 2010; - IV. Organize two seminars, one on the progress of the study and one for the dissemination of the information of the final report; - V. Translate the report into German, French and/or English. The contract will run for around 18 months, and should be concluded by mid 1998.
