Survival in space and time: Identifying mortality bottlenecks along the annual-cycle of vultures

Project description

Improved tracking to save the vultures

The list of species threatened with extinction is constantly growing. Knowledge-based conservation actions are vital to address this loss. Currently, however, our understanding of extinction, especially in the case of vultures, is limited to the breeding seasons and small representations of species. For this reason, the EU-funded SURVIVALIST project proposes a ground-breaking approach to collect and analyse data for a better prognosis of animal survival. It will identify mortality in time and across species' annual cycle and all life-stages. It will also analyse specific characteristics of areas where the mortality is concentrated to ensure effective protection of endangered European vultures to meet the EU goals regarding biodiversity strategy.
