Development of an electrochemical multiSEnsor platform for the simultaneous detection of emerging bREast caNcer biomArkers in a blood droplet

Project description

A point-of-care assay for breast cancer diagnosis

Prompt diagnosis of cancer necessitates sensitive assays at the point of care that can reliably pick up biomarkers secreted by cancer cells. The EU-funded SERENA project focuses on the development of a multisensor platform that can detect microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs associated with breast cancer. The device will contain nanotechnology-based sensors for whole blood analysis at the point of care. Given that breast cancer is among the most prevalent forms of cancer in women, the SERENA device is expected to improve not only diagnosis but prognosis and follow-up as well.

Objective

This proposal aims to address the unmet needs, opportunities, and challenges in the field of liquid biopsy and PoC devices for the detection of emerging cancer biomarkers in blood.
Circulating microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs as well as autoantibodies are promising cancer biomarkers for liquid biopsy.
My goal is to develop a rapid, portable, easy-use, and reliable electrochemical nanostructured multisensor platform for their simultaneous detection in whole blood for early breast cancer diagnosis, prognosis and patient follow-up. I will merge the advantages of nucleic acid analogues with those of graphene-nanoparticle hybrid composites to develop a platform based on the use of inexpensive screen printed electrodes, produced by cutting-edge green technologies.
An interdisciplinary approach will drive me towards the development and delivery of this novel diagnostic device with tremendous potential in nanomedicine.
This fellowship aims to build on my recognised background in DNA nanotechnology and achieve new complementary expertise in electrochemistry, cutting-edge nanotechnology and nanoscience-based biosensors, through knowledge transfer and related training activities under the supervision of Prof. Merkoçi, a world-renowned expert in these fields. Meanwhile, the host institution (ICN2) will benefit from my skills in DNA nanotechnology for bioanalytical applications.
Moreover, this fellowship will allow me to refine and acquire complementary transferable skills, including proposal writing, patents and IPR, project management, and leadership skills. I intend also exploit the opportunities to develop professionally by supporting the ICN2 Communication Department and by getting involved in the ICN2’s gender actions.
The original scientific output and added-value career development benefits of this fellowship would greatly support me in gaining the necessary skills and credentials to become an independent and productive European PI.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
