Periodic Reporting for period 1 - MIZS-ESFRI (SLOVENIAN PRESIDENCY EVENT: LAUNCH OF ESFRI ROADMAP 2021)
Reporting period: 2021-04-01 to 2022-02-28
Taking into consideration the Covid-19 situation in Slovenia at the beginning of the November 2021 and consequent recommendations of the Slovenian national authority responsible for public health that all events by the end of 2021 could be organised only in virtual format, it was at the end decided (the dedicated Program Committee in close consultation with ESFRI) that only ESFRI plenary meeting and ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Launch Event could be organised as online events. For ESFRI Stakeholders Forum, it was however decided to be postponed to the date, when it could be organised physically. More details you can find in the following chapter on implementation.
This conference was part of a series of events marking the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It was organised by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and the preparation done in close cooperation with ESFRI, European Commission and StR-ESFRI. The Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union originally planned a set of three-days events dedicated to the work of ESFRI in Ljubljana called “ESFRI Days” from the 6. – 8. December 2021:
• the ordinary 78th meeting of the European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) on the 6. and 7. December 2021,
• the launch event for the ESFRI Roadmap 2021 on large scale research infrastructures on the 7. December 2021 afternoon and
• whole day 1st ESFRI Stakeholder Forum on the 8. December.
The main objectives of the ESFRI Roadmap 2021 launch event were:
• To make a formal, public presentation of the ESFRI Roadmap 2021,
• To discuss with major stakeholders the outcomes and conclusions of the ESFRI 2021 road-mapping exercise,
• To reflect on the main challenges for implementation of research infrastructures,
• To facilitate a quick start towards implementation for new research infrastructures included in the Roadmap,
• To reflect on possible actions aiming at long-term sustainability of research infrastructures,
• To prepare ground for the planning of the next ESFRI Roadmap update.
With the Launch of ESFRI Roadmap 2021 on the 7. December 2021, the sixth Roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI RM2021) was presented and promoted among European researchers, policy and decision makers, funders and broader public. This event was the culmination point of the 2021 Roadmap update process and marked the end of the 2021 update process and the start of the follow up period. The key messages of the 2021 edition of the Roadmap underlined the importance of world-class RIs in enabling cutting-edge research to address the pressing requests and challenges of our society. ESFRI and its roadmaps play a key role in this process by promoting the importance of Research Infrastructures, the prioritization of common investments in facilities available to all European researchers, and in the joint development of European and national RI policies. This conference contributed towards the expected impacts, first of all by highlighting the updated ESFRI 2021 Roadmap itself and, within it, the priorities for research infrastructure development in Europe that were discussed with many highly qualified stakeholders and representatives from different facilities.
In a widely attended on-line event, full of insights and exchange of ideas and knowledge on the Research Infrastructures ecosystem in Europe took place. A deep analysis of the real nature and position of RIs in science and society was also provided. The expected impacts of the event include a new impetus for the implementation and long-term sustainability of the research infrastructures on the ESFRI Roadmap. Discussions planned during the event also contributed to reinforced valorisation of socio-economic impact of RIs. Equipping Europe with infrastructures for ground breaking impactful research is at the heart of the ESFRI Roadmap. The Roadmap identifies European investment priorities and provides directions for their further development, and looks into the future challenges of Research Infrastructure policy and analyses the main features of the RIs landscape in Europe to implement an integrated and interconnected Research infrastructure eco-system as an important element of the European Research Area (ERA) Policy Agenda.
