Project description
A closer look at church and national identity in Central Eastern Europe
Religion and national identity are very much entwined in many Central Eastern European countries. The ERC-funded SOVEREIGNTY project will explore why the modern state (with its claim to sovereignty) cares so much about secularisation and (re)sacralisation. The initiative will therefore investigate the (pre)history of the conflict-ridden relationship between transnational institutions and the modern state and also the players who stood at the point of intersection of the two. Specifically, it will analyse the shifts in relations between the state and one of the oldest transnational institutions in the world, the Catholic Church.
