The STE(A)M Education European Roadmap

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - The SEER (The STE(A)M Education European Roadmap)

Période du rapport: 2022-09-01 au 2023-08-31

The main aim of the SEER is to provide a set of roadmaps that will lead to the policy and institutional changes necessary for the large-scale implementation and mainstreaming of STE(A)M education in Europe.

To achieve this, the SEER will synthesize the status of STE(A)M Education and evaluate national and international policies to understand which ones best support STE(A)M education. This analysis and resulting recommendations will be provided to Ministries of Education and EU policymakers to support policy improvements in Europe.

In addition, STE(A)M initiatives and EU-funded projects of all teaching levels will be mapped and evaluated, identifying educational strategies that provide the best outcomes for teachers and students. Combining this mapping exercise with an analysis of the teachers’ and schools’ needs will help identify gaps in European STE(A)M initiatives.

Using this extensive approach, the SEER will guide its various stakeholders to support the uptake of STE(A)M education in Europe and beyond.
At the end of Y1, the SEER released its first outcomes which will be parts of the SEER Roadmap.

These outcomes outline the SEER methodology and principles, map STE(A)M education initiatives in Europe and offer insights into the needs and perspectives of educational stakeholders.

Mapping of STEM Education Practices and Policies
The SEER worked on an analysis of STEM education practices and policies in Europe. The result of this effort (https://tinyurl.com/yc7wdyey) offers a dive into EU policies and related practices, with the aim of identifying ideal conditions for the mainstreaming of STE(A)M education. It includes a literature review of STE(A)M educational research trends, a qualitative analysis of European-funded STEM projects, and evaluations of national STEM education policies.

White Paper:
The SEER released a White Paper (https://tinyurl.com/47d56fu5) emphasizing the significance of STE(A)M education, its potential benefits, and the initial steps to enhance accessibility. It outlines SEER's scope, principles, background, and methodology for identifying stakeholder needs, policy gaps, and STE(A)M best practices in Europe.

Exchange Activities
In Y1, the SEER organized exchange activities, like focus groups and workshops, engaging education stakeholders in STE(A)M related discussions. These exchanges enriched our understanding of STE(A)M education's challenges and opportunities in Europe. Summaries of the first two focus groups, on distributive leadership in schools (https://tinyurl.com/5e4yzxht) and STE(A)M resources accessibility for educators (https://tinyurl.com/bdezs5a7) are available.

Policy Brief
The SEER first policy brief (https://tinyurl.com/2c53hw6c) reflects on the evolution of STE(A)M education over the last decade and presents key findings from initial research on European STE(A)M initiatives. It culminates in policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and impact of STE(A)M education and it serves as an instrument for guiding policymakers and stakeholders toward informed decisions that will shape the future of STE(A)M education in Europe.

The SEER Reports
To get acquainted with the project and its methodology you may consult our report gallery (https://www.scientix.eu/the-seer-reports).
The SEER aims to advance STE(A)M education, build on previous work, address policy limitations, and influence policy changes through research and engagement with Ministries of Education and policymakers.

Within Y1, D1.1 offered a much-needed overview of what exists while it reveals the gaps that need to be covered in the immediate future. It also offers a first analysis of existing EU policies and related practices, with the aim of identifying ideal conditions for the mainstreaming of STE(A)M education. D1.1 includes a literature review of STE(A)M educational research trends, a qualitative analysis of European-funded STEM projects, and evaluations of national STEM education policies within the SEER Consortium countries.

The outcomes of this work, feed into the work of both WP2 and WP3 while certain findings are also reflected in the recommendations presented in the Policy Brief. In addition, these are currently communicated to MoEs via EUN’s STEM WG (24 MoEs) and to the industrial networks with policy-making influence, including STEM Alliance, the STEM Coalition, and ICSE’s network.

The SEER has been presented on 13 different occasions, and 5 conferences while it reached more than 46,928 views, received 671 Likes and various posts have been shared 253 times.

Finally, the SEER has taken the lead in establishing the close collaboration of the three Roadmap projects that is needed in order to arrive at one Atlas of Roadmaps (https://www.scientix.eu/steam-atlas) at the end of the funding period. The three projects use different perspectives and methodologies to develop and deliver STE(A)M Roadmaps for Science Education in Horizon Europe.
