Innovative sorting facility for the circularity of aluminium scraps

Project description

Hi-tech aluminium scrap sorting facility to improve recycling

Aluminium has ubiquitous applications and is used extensively. Fortunately, it can be recycled time and again without property loss. However, the EU loses about 1 million tonnes of recycled aluminium scrap annually due to impurities that make it unusable for the high-end EU smelter industry. Working closely with industrial partner Reukema, the MSCA-funded SortCAS project will integrate groundbreaking technologies such as particle technology and AI to create a facility that automates the sorting of high-quality aluminium scraps. It will operate at a scale suitable for industry. Project outcomes will support recycling efforts and the circular economy, while decreasing resource exploitation and emissions.

Objective

As the second most widely used metal in the world (only after iron), aluminium plays a key role in realizing the circular economy and the climate neutrality of both EU and our world. In essence, aluminium has the potential to be a fully circular material that can be repeatedly recycled without losing its properties. However, many recycled aluminium scraps of EU are currently contaminated with high-level impurities, which make them not suitable for reuse. This causes a loss of around one million tonnes of scraps per year in EU and hinders the achievement of circularity. This project will develop an innovative facility for the automated sorting of high-quality aluminium scraps. The facility will be based on three innovative technologies, i.e. singulation, multi-sensor system and ejection. It will be developed with an interdisciplinary approach that combines particle technology, computational modelling, advanced sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), and automation. Through a close collaboration with an industrial partner Reukema, the developed technologies will be carefully validated and integrated into a sorting facility at an industrially applicable scale (e.g. at least 4 tons per hour of clean sorted and specified scrap alloys). The completion of the project will constitute a big advancement in the circularity of aluminium scraps, and will contribute to the substantial reduction of resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
