Forum for Emerging Enabling Technologies in Support to the Digital and Green Transitions through Value Sensitive Innovations

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - FORGING (Forum for Emerging Enabling Technologies in Support to the Digital and Green Transitions through Value Sensitive Innovations)

Période du rapport: 2022-10-01 au 2024-03-31

Europe is currently strong in many sectors, but to keep its industrial sovereignty, it must secure early leadership in new and emerging enabling technologies that are both socially and environmentally responsible. FORGING methodology comes in as a new approach to analyse the current state-of-the-art of emerging technologies from early stages on. It envisions all possible future scenarios for its deployment while involving stakeholders from the quadruple helix of each ecosystem. It identifies challenges, needs, risks and potentialities, and promotes a value-sensitive approach for new solutions and their deployment taking into consideration its societal and environmental impact, and the implications of these novel technologies, namely:
• Artificial Intelligence
• Cyber safe data transmission, storage, and analysis technologies
• Real time based digital twins and simulation
• Bio-inspired technologies and smart materials
• Human centric solutions and human machine interaction
• Technologies for energy efficiency & trustworthy autonomy

FORGING positions itself in the European landscape leveraging on the major results of concluded and existing initiatives on emerging enabling technologies from early stages on (TRL3+) and societal engagement, to go further and become a reference participatory cross-discipline and cross-sectoral forum to co-create the enabling technologies of the future. To this aim we are developing an approach to foment the absorption of new enabling technologies whilst testing it over 6 technological frameworks.

FORGING has identified four specific objectives that underpin our mission to systematically improve European leadership on responsible future enabling technologies.
FORGING catalyses a 310 strong collaborative forum of multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary stakeholders in which different actors (academia, industry, policy, society, etc) bring their expertise, values, motivations, and experiences to co-create possible use cases for the enabling technologies of the future through an interactive innovation journey. Key to this forum is providing stakeholders with co-creation mechanisms aimed at binding stakeholders, securing the effectiveness of multidisciplinary resources, and maximising the forum capacity to achieve shorter time to market of the emerging technologies.

Co-creation environments are established where interactional relations between individuals and new technological visions are enablers for uncovering responsible technologies (build upon societal and environmental values). FORGING participatory approach stimulates community traction and calls for greater focus on what is important to different types of individuals, groups, and societies, that is, a post human-centred perspective including environmental implications. Co-creation environments are created with carefully planned co-creation methodology that is implemented first in pilot format and afterwards expanded.

In the first 18 months of the project, we collaboratively identified responsible technologies from early stages on with potential to become Europe’s future enabling technologies in support to the digital and green transitions and their potential impacts. Our focus is on the enabling technologies supporting Industry 5.0 which integrate social and environmental European priorities into technological innovation, shifting the focus from individual technologies to a multidisciplinary and systemic approaches. One of the major outcomes of the FORGING project is the FORGING Playbook and Toolkit that represent proactive tools resulting from this new methodology to facilitate guidance and materials for exploration, reflection, co-creation and evaluation of emerging technologies.
