Trailblazing Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Cities

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - InCITIES (Trailblazing Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Cities)

Período documentado: 2022-10-01 hasta 2023-12-31

The InCITIES aims to achieve the transformations of HEIs and their surrounding ecosystem centred around on cities’ needs of inclusion, sustainability and resilience. InCITIES has 4 objectives: 1) Strategies towards research-based sustainable universities including open science and career opportunities. 2) Build a long-term network of participating HEIs and surrounding ecosystems based on integrated knowledge HUBs. 3) Increase scientific, technological and staff capacity by sharing the best pedagogical, research, management and administrative practices in the consortium. 4) Promote digitally driven universities by creating an open and innovative education and training platform in synergy with the project research and innovation agenda on inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities.
Five methods are jointly developed: 1) Method for a common research map, 2) Capacity building actions based on the Learning by Developing pedagogical model, 3) Talent scout and career opportunity strategy, 4) Capacity building on equality, diversity and inclusion, 5) Methods to address enablers and barriers to integration of the InCITIES HEIs.
Capacity building actions implemented are a step towards the submission to the EUI; it will strengthen the ERA, the EEA, and Europe’s approach to cooperation in R&I.
Throughout the InCITIES, significant strides have been made in advancing technical and scientific aspects across various activities within the project. Significant dedicated efforts were directed towards the establishment of knowledge HUBs focused on research and innovation. Surveys were conducted among Higher Education Institution (HEI) partners to ascertain prevailing research trends and topics in seven thematic areas relevant to the project's objectives. These surveys facilitated the identification of key scientific interests and laid the groundwork for collaborative initiatives. A meticulous step-by-step approach was devised for the development of these knowledge HUBs, fostering a conducive environment for cross-knowledge exchange among partners. Additionally, a comprehensive collection of scientific references and relevant projects was compiled, enriching the collaborative landscape and enhancing the probability of joint research endeavors.

The focus shifted also towards talent scouting and career opportunities strategy, crucial for nurturing a vibrant research environment within the consortium. A dedicated working group comprising representatives from each partner HEI was formed to delve into existing guidelines, strategies, and practices concerning Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R). Through meticulous bilateral meetings, internal processes of each institution were scrutinized to identify areas necessitating enhancement in talent scouting and career development. Aforementioned activities provided insightful analyses of each institution's adherence to the 40 principles of the European Charter and Code, laying a strong foundation for future initiatives aimed at securing the HR Excellence in Research Award.

Similarly, concerted efforts were directed towards fostering equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the academic realm. A comprehensive survey was conducted across partner institutions to assess the current EDI landscape, taking into account the nuanced national histories, cultural backgrounds, and institutional frameworks. Findings from this survey informed subsequent strategies for developing joint EDI plans, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive academic environment.

Lastly, the development of a Pedagogical Model Strategic Plan, aimed at advancing learning methodologies in alignment with the project's objectives. This plan laid the foundation for a common teaching curriculum cantered around Inclusive, Sustainable, and Resilient (ISR) cities. Furthermore, the introduction of a Learning by Developing Pedagogical Model (LbD) provided avenues for hands-on learning experiences, fostering collaboration with local and regional stakeholders.
The activities and achievements within the InCITIES project hold substantial potential to deliver significant outcomes and influence various domains, spanning scientific progress, societal integration, and sustainable urban development. In a nutshell, the following anticipated impacts and requisite actions for extended adoption and success:

Scientific Impact and Results:
The establishment of knowledge HUBs and collaborative research endeavours form the bedrock for scientific advancements and innovative breakthroughs in the project's thematic domains. These efforts have resulted in the identification of pivotal research topics, the consolidation of scientific references, and the formulation of shared research roadmaps. Potential ramifications encompass the creation of fresh knowledge frontiers, the progression of interdisciplinary research activities, and the dissemination of insights through academic courses, scientific publications and conference presentations.

Societal Impact and Results:
Initiatives aimed at nurturing equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within academic circles contribute to a more inclusive and equitable milieu. Outputs include the assessment of prevalent EDI landscapes, the conceptualization of collective EDI strategies, and the execution of measures to foster diversity and inclusivity. Foreseen impacts entail heightened opportunities for marginalized groups, enhanced academic efficacy and retention rates, and the cultivation of a more diverse and innovative research environment.

Urban Development Impact and Results:
The Pedagogical Model Strategic Plan and the Learning by Developing Pedagogical Model (LbD) aspire to equip students with the requisite competencies to tackle challenges in inclusive, sustainable, and resilient (ISR) urban settings. Accomplishments encompass the formulation of standardized teaching frameworks, pilot programs, and web-based training initiatives centred on ISR cities (Lisbon and Žilina). Prospective outcomes encompass the nurturing of a skilled workforce adept at addressing urban challenges, the advocacy of sustainable urban development methodologies, and the fortification of resilient communities.

As a culmination, the project results will encompass the following impacts:
• Establishment of knowledge HUBs that foster collaborative research and innovation endeavours.
• Enhanced talent scouting and career advancement strategies within partner institutions.
• Progression of equality, diversity, and inclusion initiatives within academic circles.
• Introduction of a Pedagogical Model that advocates hands-on learning in the ISR cities.
• Dissemination of findings through academic publications, conferences, and stakeholder engagements.
• Internationalization initiatives to foster cross-border collaborations and amplify the global impact of the project's outcomes.

Towards the above-mentioned objectives and impacts, InCITIES organises two Pilots in Lisbon and Zilina cities focused on the topics of ISR topics.
