I4WORLD - Imaging and Characterisation for a Sustainable World (2022-2027) is a new doctoral programme within a well-established doctoral training environment at the University of Oulu (UOULU) in Finland.
The aim of the I4WORLD is to train 25 future leaders, who have strong scientific background combined with excellent communication skills and understanding of sustainability as an essential part of application the scientific results for the benefit of humankind and the environment. I4WORLD is based on taking the benefits of novel imaging and characterisation methods beyond the traditional borders between research fields to the sustainable world. I4WORLD research themes as aligned with UN SDGs: Good Health and Wellbeing, Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Industries and Production, and Clean Water, Biodiversity and Environment.

In 2023 Spring, 25 fellows were selected for the I4WORLD doctoral programme. They represent nine different nationalities, ten of them are women and 15 men. The I4WORLD programme includes individual scientific training given under expert supervision together with partner companies and academic organizations.
The fellows have started the four-year doctoral training consisting of studies, research, secondments and thesis. Tens of research publications and conference presentations have been realised and number of interdisciplinary research visits have been taken place.
Doctoral researchers will undertake secondment (minimum of 6 months) with the Associated Partners and complete mandatory course training addressing sustainable development, dissemination, communication, business, innovation and gender and diversity issues.
Research projects of the fellows involve collaboration of top-level researchers from the UOULU and partner organizations. Partner organizations are committed to provide support in training, supervision and hosting secondments. Intersectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration ensures the coverage of the training in imaging and characterization methods for unique toolbox for the future research leader career.
The I4WORLD programme builds on combination of world leading novel imaging and characterisation methods excellence towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The interdisciplinary research projects of fellows take part in forwarding UN sustainable development goals thus solving important global questions (e.g. developing clean energy solutions, identifying and managing health risks, developing sustainable industrial processes, managing biodiversity loss). I4WORLD projects explore new areas of application and novel solutions that will be developed and utilised to image and characterise objects and materials in order to provide information beyond current knowledge. The unique trainig provided in the programme will ensure the development of the fellows to interdisciplinary, intersectoral and international sustainability research leaders of the future.
