All-acoustic Bubble Microrheology for rapid screening of formulations

Project description

All-acoustic bubble rheology for sustainable product development

Formulated products, such as detergents, shampoos, and paints, are extremely complex multicomponent materials, where a number of chemical compounds are blended to obtain the desired texture and performance. In response to increasing awareness of customers, as well as new regulatory frameworks, there is an urgent need of novel rapid screening tools for chemical industries to quickly create new products. The EU-funded ABuMic project will provide a new tool for rapid screening of formulations. This technology will streamline development of healthier and more sustainable consumer products.

Objective

ABuMic aims to address a critical challenge of our society: the transition of formulated products to a safer and more sustainable industry. There is increasing pressure on the industry, both from the public opinion and regulatory bodies, for healthier food products and more environmentally friendly paints and coatings. As a result, in the coming years many formulated products will need to be re-formulated. This will come at a huge cost for the industry, because by and large, product development is still done by trial-and-error. This means that the formulated products industry needs more than ever the capability to predict formulation performance for rapid screening of new products. The current challenge is that processing flows and end-use produce flow conditions that are not accessible with existing methods for materials characterization. With the ABuMic device, a formulation scientist will be able to design a new product more quickly and efficiently, thereby lowering the cost of new product development, and supporting the transition to healthier and more sustainable products.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
