Green Cops and ENGOs: Comparing the Regulation of Environmental Crime in Europe

Project description

Uniting forces against environmental crime in Europe

Across Europe, environmental crime is threatening our ecosystems, economies and public health. Illegal activities like poaching, pollution and illegal waste disposal wreak havoc, often operating unchecked. This criminal activity not only jeopardises the environment but also undermines the stability of European nations. With the support of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, the GREENEUROPE project is uniting police officers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to combat environmental crime in Belgium, Denmark, France and Germany. Specifically, the project addresses three questions: Who are the NGOs supporting green policing in Europe, and what roles do they play? How do NGOs and police officers collaborate? And finally, how does the involvement of non-state actors reshape our comprehension of modern European states?

Objective

This project explores the collaboration between police officers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the fight against environmental crime in Europe. It uses qualitative methods and comparison of four case studies (Belgium, Denmark, France and Germany) to account for convergence/divergence in three questions: who are the NGOS supporting green policing in Europe and what do they do?; How do NGOs and police officers work together in green policing?; How does the policing role of non-state actors change our understanding of contemporary European states? Answering these questions is critical as the project tackles a key concern of European citizens and enriches the empirical and theoretical understanding of contemporary European policing and states.
