South Marmara Hydrogen Shore

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - HYSouthMarmara (South Marmara Hydrogen Shore)

Reporting period: 2023-07-01 to 2024-12-31

The South Marmara region is strategically positioned to develop a hydrogen valley, supporting Turkiye’s 2053 carbon neutrality goal. Located between major cities and bordered by the Aegean and Marmara Seas, it leads in renewable capacity (3 GW) but still holds untapped potential. Committed to phasing out fossil fuels, the region sees green hydrogen as key, with HYSouthMarmara as the first step toward this vision. The objectives of the project are:

- Create a detailed roadmap which sets out recommendations up to 2035 and beyond in terms of establishing a regional hydrogen economy
- Create the South Marmara Hydrogen Backbone by determining the infrastructure requirements for the storage, transport and deployment of the green hydrogen
- Explore and create new markets for the use of green hydrogen and its liquid and solid derivatives.
- Design, deploy and install an electrolyser with a minimum 4MW of power to reach annual hydrogen production of 500 tonnes
- Develop and implement a digital twin of the hydrogen production system that will create the flexibility for renewable energy usage and efficient production of green hydrogen
- Demonstrate the uptake and replacement of grey hydrogen with green hydrogen in two industries, hydrogen peroxide production and glass manufacturing
- Conceive and build a kiln to use hydrogen as a fuel in energy-intensive ceramic industrial processes
- Develop Sodium Borohydride plant and use it as a basis for a power supply
- Create a meaningful communication plan to show to public and stakeholders the benefits of green hydrogen and help other regions to create their own hydrogen valleys
WP1: South Marmara Hydrogen Shore Road-map & Strategic Business Model Development
- GMKA conducted a structured tender process for the Hydrogen Roadmap, awarding a nine-month study. The roadmap, expected in 2025, will guide regional hydrogen development.
- Stakeholder engagement was prioritized, leading to the establishment of the South Marmara Hydrogen Shore Platform. Meetings and site visits introduced potential members to the project.
- Feasibility reports for a 50,000 t/year green methanol plant and a 100,000 t/year green ammonia plant are completed.

WP2 & WP3: Green Hydrogen Plant, Digital Twin, Storage & Distribution
- Feasibility report for a 4 MW green hydrogen plant, including storage and transport, is completed. FID phase is ongoing.
- Preliminary business model studies were conducted. Storage tanks, compressors, and tube-trailers for transport were considered, with final selections pending off-taker commitments.

WP4: Industrial Use Cases 1& 2: Direct Intake/Replacement
- Şişecam and HPAS’s grey hydrogen consumption data were analyzed to determine potential green hydrogen replacement.
- Şişecam and HPAS infrastructure assessments identified optimal integration points for 25-bar pressurized green hydrogen.

WP5: Industrial Use Case 3: Hydrogen as a fuel in energy-intensive ceramic industrial processes
- Design and engineering calculations for the hybrid kiln were completed. Structural components were ordered, and metal frame construction was finalized. Insulation refractory brick assembly is next.

WP6: Industrial Use Case 4: Installing Sodium Borohydride (NaBH4) Pilot Plant, Development of Sodium Borohydride-based Power Supply
- Design studies for a NaBH4-based hydrogen generation system were conducted, including PFD and P&ID diagrams.
- Hydrolysis catalysts were synthesized and tested. System installation, integration, and commissioning are in progress. Further validation will assess yield, reliability, and performance.

WP7: Dissemination and Communication Activities
- A communication plan was developed to engage stakeholders and promote hydrogen technology.
- Branding materials (logo, banner, leaflet) were created, and a project website was launched.
- Social media (LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter) was used for outreach. Promotional videos, press releases, and materials were prepared. Workshops and events were planned to support hydrogen ecosystem development.

WP8: Project Management
- Kick-off, General Assembly, and Executive Board meetings were held to align partners and track progress.
- Monthly online meetings with work package leaders ensure timely execution.
- A SharePoint platform was set up for document sharing.
- Training sessions were organized to enhance consortium members' Horizon project expertise.
The HYSouthMarmara project will establish a Green Hydrogen value chain in South Marmara, integrating upstream and downstream activities across multiple industries. It will enable Türkiye’s first MW-scale electrolyser installation, driving industrial and scientific advancements in low-carbon technologies. Leveraging Bandırma Energy Base’s renewable capacity, the project will optimize energy use through digital twin technology and advanced storage algorithms. Safety will be ensured through HAZOP studies and risk management under ISO55001. A key innovation is the pilot production of Sodium BoroHydride for efficient hydrogen storage and transport. Additionally, the project will explore hydrogen integration in ceramic production, aiming for long-term decarbonization and future research opportunities.
