Single pilOt Line Operations

Project description

Industrial research on ATM solution for Single Pilot Operation

In recent years, Single Pilot Operation (SPO) in civil aviation is an increasingly discussed topic within the aviation ecosystem. This raises critical challenges in terms of safety and human performance (e.g. workload, pilot-automation teaming), cybersecurity, regulation, communication (to unions and general public), and the overall operational and technical feasibility of ATM operations in various situations (nominal, non-nominal, and emergency situations). In this context, the EU-funded SOLO project is a collaborative initiative aiming to develop an ATM solution making SPO (i.e. global set of functions, procedures, and communication links) feasible and acceptable for all aviation parties. As aviation charts a new course, SOLO stands at the forefront, shaping the future of ATM.

Objective

SOLO intends to pave the way for the commercial operations of next generation airliners proposing Single Pilot Operations, which are anticipated within the next decade.

To this aim, SOLO encompasses one single Operational solution that will produce a TRL 4 ATM Concept of Single Pilot Operations. This will initiated based on previous works initiated by Airbus and ATR with the support of French partners (DSNA, EUROCONTROL, ENAC) and, as well, be based on the technological bricks developed during those previous R&T activities. In support to Airbus and ATR, the maturation and validation of this concept will be done with the formal cooperation of DFS, ENAIRE/CRIDA, EUROCONTROL, DSNA, NATS and INDRA. Indeed, one major constraint for the TRL 4 concept will be to reduce to the minimum necessary the impacts on ATC tools and procedures.

Airline functions and tools will need to be enhanced to prepare and execute Single Pilot Operations, in addition to the major evolutions needed at the cockpit side (not the purpose of SOLO). Several airlines had -on an anonymous way- supported Airbus and ATR for several years. It is planned that a similar way of working will be done during the execution of the project.

In the end, the TRL 4 Concept of Operations (instantiated by a comprehensive SPR/INTEROP/OSED) will feed further, more specific R&T activities and as well provide solid basis to various standardization and regulatory bodies such as ICAO, EASA, FAA, CAAC.
