Green Aviation – Lean Arrivals And Dynamicity

Project description

A new concept for better air traffic control

Recent significant changes in weather conditions, as well as crises and impactful events, have resulted in an increased management workload for air traffic control (ATC). Weather disruptions create challenges in the management of incoming and outgoing flights, and events have led to rapid fluctuations in flight demand. The EU-funded GALAAD project aims to contribute to the SESAR 3 IR aviation Green Deal topic by developing and validating an innovative solution that will enhance ATC operations, rendering them more resilient, adaptable and sustainable in the face of potential disruptions. To achieve this, the project will introduce a concept for flexible RNP arrival routes for aircraft, enabling better responses to high traffic density and improving fuel efficiency.

Objective

The GALAAD Green Aviation Lean Arrivals And Dynamicity project proposal contributes to the SESAR 3 IR Aviation Green Deal topic.
The project proposes to develop and validate a concept for dynamic RNP route allocation in the terminal area in order to make ATC operations more sustainable, resilient, responsive and adaptative towards operational condition changes and traffic demand variations. The research addresses the development of the end-to-end concept, including relevant decision support tools evolution and cross-border aspects. The idea is to move away from fixed RNP arrival route stuctures towards a flexible approach able to provide agile responses to variations of operational conditions in the terminal area, such as traffic density, airspace availability or environmental/weather constraints, and to develop the best eco-friendly routes structures.
As operational improvements, the introduction of the GALAAD-proposed concept related to a dynamicity in the use of RNP route structures within the terminal area is expected to provide greater fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability without negatively impacting capacity while improving safety and cost efficiency.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
