Project description
A new concept for better air traffic control
Recent significant changes in weather conditions, as well as crises and impactful events, have resulted in an increased management workload for air traffic control (ATC). Weather disruptions create challenges in the management of incoming and outgoing flights, and events have led to rapid fluctuations in flight demand. The EU-funded GALAAD project aims to contribute to the SESAR 3 IR aviation Green Deal topic by developing and validating an innovative solution that will enhance ATC operations, rendering them more resilient, adaptable and sustainable in the face of potential disruptions. To achieve this, the project will introduce a concept for flexible RNP arrival routes for aircraft, enabling better responses to high traffic density and improving fuel efficiency.
Objective
The GALAAD “Green Aviation – Lean Arrivals And Dynamicity” project proposal contributes to the SESAR 3 IR Aviation Green Deal topic.
The project proposes to develop and validate a concept for dynamic PBN route allocation in the terminal area, in order to make ATC operations more sustainable, resilient, and adaptable to changing operational conditions and traffic demand. The research covers the end-to-end concept, including the evolution of relevant ATCO’s decision support tools. The core idea is to move away from fixed PBN arrival route structures towards a more flexible and dynamic approach. This would enable agile responses to variations in traffic density, airspace availability, and environmental or weather constraints, ultimately supporting the design of more eco-efficient route structures.
From an operational perspective, the GALAAD concept introduces dynamic use of PBN route structures within the (TMA) Terminal Manoeuvring Area operations, aiming to improve fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability, while maintaining capacity and enhancing safety and cost efficiency
