Space-based SST (mission, system and sensors network) Horizon Europe TOP3

Project description

Charting a path to enhanced European space capabilities

With the growing reliance on space technology, ensuring the safety and sovereignty of assets in orbit has become a pressing concern. With this in mind, the Horizon Europe grant catalyses a transformative initiative within the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) framework. The EU-funded HE_EUSST_SB_TOP3 project, the first of its kind, is poised to address these challenges by exploring technical solutions. Additionally, it is harnessing small satellites and reducing dependence on external technologies, ultimately strengthening Europe's autonomy in space surveillance and tracking. The project marks the initial foray into Space-Based Space Surveillance within the EU SST framework, charting a path to enhance European space capabilities and fortify self-reliance in space tracking technology.

Objective

This Horizon Europe grant is to be understood within a wider context on EUSST, where other grants are being executed simultaneously with the common objective of improving the EU autonomy on Space Surveillance and Tracking.
In particular, this TOP focuses on:
- Study and assess several technical solutions for the development of a future European capability of SBSS.
- Explore the use of small satellite solutions to reduce CAPEX and OPEX
- To develop in the mid-term the European capacity to operate independently SBSS.
- To reduce the dependence on critical SBSS technologies and capabilities from outside Europe,

The is the first activity related to SBSS within EUSST.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
