SPACE-BASED APPLICATIONS FOR TRANSPORT MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT

Project description

Satellite data for improved land transport maintenance and efficiency

Satellite data has revolutionised data collection across various sectors, providing invaluable benefits to scientific research and enhancing tracking and monitoring capabilities. However, there remains untapped potential for using satellite technology in smaller-scale tracking operations. In this context, the EU-funded SPATRA project aims to harness satellite data for monitoring and management purposes. Specifically, the project intends to develop two downstream applications for rail and road transport. By leveraging satellite and in situ data, SPATRA will enable the tracking of road congestion and temperature-related impacts on railway infrastructure and logistics. This data will then be utilised to enhance efficiency and maintenance practices in these sectors.

Objective

SPATRA aims at increasing the use of satellite data in land transport by developing two demonstrators in new downstream applications for monitoring and management of rail and road transport.
SPATRA will use satellite with assisted in-situ data to develop two innovative applications for smart transport and logistics, to solve problems of principal modes of land transport, road and rail: road traffic congestions and negative impact of extreme temperatures on railway infrastructure.
• SPATRA will provide benefits of satellite-based logistics and road traffic flow monitoring extended beyond improved efficiency by reducing congestion and improving the flow of goods and people.
• A novel space-based service predicting the risk of rail buckling based on downstream application for estimation of the rail temperature will be developed that can support rail management plan to prevent track buckling induced train derailments.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
