Noble-Gas Compounds meet X-ray Charge Density and High-Pressure Research

Project description

Exploring noble gas compound behaviour under high pressures

The EU-funded NgCHEM project aims to study noble gas compounds using X-ray charge-density analysis and study their structural behaviour under high-pressure conditions. The proposed research aims to fill a gap in noble gas chemistry, where most studies are computational predictions with few experimental analyses. NgCHEM will provide the first X-ray charge-density analysis on noble gas compounds, providing new insight into their chemical bonding and intermolecular interactions. The project will also conduct diamond anvil cell experiments and charge-density analysis to understand the chemical and structural behaviour of these compounds under high pressures. Special methods will be utilised for the synthesis and structural characterisation of reactive, air-sensitive noble gas compounds.

Objective

This project aims to study noble-gas compounds by X-ray charge-density analysis and explore the structural behavior of selected noble-gas species under high-pressure in GPa range. Experimental electron-density distribution of reactive fluorides is rarely studied and no experimental charge-density analysis on noble-gas compounds has been reported to this date. Moreover, there is a genuine interest in noble-gas chemistry under extreme conditions of high pressure. However, the vast majority of studies are computational predictions and experiment significantly lags behind the theory. The project results would constitute the first X-ray charge density analysis on noble-gas compounds. This would provide new insights into the chemical bonding of noble-gas compounds and nature of their intermolecular interactions. Moreover, diamond anvil cell experiments would significantly advance our understanding of the hitherto unknown high-pressure chemical and structural behavior of noble-gas compounds. An ambitious, but challenging, experimental charge-density analysis of noble-gas compound under high pressure in diamond anvil cell will also be undertaken. Special experimental methods and techniques will be employed for the synthesis and structural characterization of reactive and air-sensitive noble-gas compounds. The two-way transfer of knowledge and skills, therefore represents an important aspect of this project.

Keywords

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
