Developing First-in-Class Diamond-based Quantum Microscopy for immediate semiconductor industry applications

Project description

Advanced quantum imaging system for the semiconductor industry

Semiconductors play a vital role in modern electronics. Diamond-based quantum sensing offers precise diagnostics for detecting magnetic field alterations caused by chip defects. However, current implementations often involve a trade-off between speed and imaging resolution. In this context, the EIC-funded DIAMONIQ project introduces the Super-resolution Quantum Imager (SQI), an advanced imaging system that combines state-of-the-art optical components with proprietary diamond production and software technology. Developed by QuantumDiamonds, the SQI addresses traditional imaging challenges by enabling imaging at sub-100 nm resolution while providing fast measurement capabilities within minutes. The project aims to test the SQI with participants from the semiconductor industry and prepare the system for commercialisation.

Objective

Semiconductors are an essential component of modern electronics. The miniaturization of semiconductors has been a key driver of technological innovation. However, as semiconductor technology continues to advance, the available quality control methods, such as thermal imaging or voltage alteration measurements, become insufficient. Diamond-based quantum sensing has the potential to answer the need for precise diagnostics of detecting magnetic field alterations caused by chips defect. But available implementations suffer from a tradeoff between speed and imaging resolution.

At QuantumDiamonds, we overcome these challenges and developed a Super-resolution Quantum Imager (SQI) that combines advanced optical components with proprietary diamond production and software. Our system enables imaging at sub-100 nm resolution and fast measurement in the range of minutes. In this project, we will test it with actors from the semiconductor industry and prepare our system for commercialization.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
