Project description
Identifying micro-behaviours through nonverbal signals
Micro-behaviours are subtle, often unconscious actions, expressions, or gestures that individuals display in everyday life. These behaviours are primarily conveyed through non-verbal cues. By gaining a deeper understanding of these nuanced signals and equipping future AI systems to recognise them, we could significantly enhance interpersonal interactions and strengthen relationships. However, current automated systems are not yet capable of effectively identifying these micro-behaviours. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the MIRROR project will use multimodal perception and deep learning techniques to automatically detect micro-behaviours through nonverbal signals, including facial expressions and body language. The project will develop context-aware, privacy-preserving machine learning methods that remain robust even in the presence of missing data.
Objective
Micro-behaviors are subtle, often unconscious actions, expressions, or gestures that individuals exhibit in their daily lives. They are often shown in nonverbal communication. Understanding these subtle cues and endowing future artificial intelligence agents this capability could enhance our interactions and relationships. However, current automated systems cannot recognize micro-behaviors. To this end, I will address this gap using multimodal perception and deep learning to automatically recognize micro-behaviors through nonverbal signals such as facial expressions and body language. I will focus on the development of context-aware and privacy-preserving machine learning methods that are robust towards missing data.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
