Towards observation-constrained UNderstanding and prEdicting of tropical Wetland mEThane emissions

Project description

Studying wetland methane emissions

Tropical wetlands are the most significant global producer of wetland methane emissions, playing a crucial role in recent atmospheric methane increases. Unfortunately, despite the importance of tropical wetland methane emissions in management, distribution, and efforts regarding emissions, more knowledge is needed about their operation, size, and variation. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme, the TUNEWET project will study tropical wetland methane emissions and, by extension, their significance and responses to climate change. It will use novel modelling tools and data streams, working at the Global Wetland Centre in Copenhagen. The results will greatly assist in managing climate mitigation strategies.

Objective

Tropical wetlands dominate wetland methane emissions globally and play a vital role in recent surges of atmospheric methane. Despite the importance of tropical wetland methane emissions in global methane budgets and future climate change, current knowledge about their magnitude, distribution and variations remains highly uncertain, which impedes effective climate strategies and actions. Through a synergy of biogeochemical (bottom-up) and atmospheric (top-down) methodologies, I propose the project TUNEWET (Towards observation-constrained UNderstanding and prEdicting of tropical Wetland mEThane emissions) to constrain tropical wetland methane emissions and their responses to climate change by integrating multiple data streams and modelling tools. I will carry out this research with Prof. Guy Schurgers at the newly founded Global Wetland Center (GWC), University of Copenhagen (UCPH). This project will gain new insights into the key processes regulating tropical wetland methane emissions and help resolve the largest uncertainty source in the global methane budget, thereby supporting science-based climate mitigation strategies.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
