Project description
Nature-based solutions and digital technologies for climate adaptation
Innovative solutions are required to address the sustainability and resilience challenges arising from rapid urbanisation and climate change. Nature-based solutions (NBS) and digital technologies (DT) present promising strategies in this regard. Integrating NBS with DT offers a compelling pathway for climate adaptation. The MSCA-funded BUSEECO project focuses on urban planning projects funded by LIFE and Horizon Europe, dedicated to sustainable development and climate adaptation. The project aims to analyse the integration of NBS and DT in European urban planning initiatives, leveraging data from various sources to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. It will utilise advanced methodologies such as the Delphi method and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis to assist in selecting projects for in-depth analysis and uncover correlations and patterns in the convergence of NBS and DT.
Objective
In response to the pressing challenges posed by rapid urbanization and climate change, innovative urban solutions are needed. Nature-based solutions (NBS) and digital technologies (DT) have emerged as promising strategies to address sustainability and resilience issues. Integrating NBS, which harnesses natural systems, with DT, which offers robust decision-making tools, offers a compelling pathway for climate adaptation. However, the convergence of NBS and digitalization remains unexplored. This research focuses on Horizon Europe-funded urban planning projects, including the LIFE program, known for their commitment to sustainable development and climate adaptation. Analyzing NBS and DT integration in these initiatives using data from the Web of Science, Google Scholar, the LIFE program, and other relevant sources, BUSEECO aims to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. To enhance this analysis, advanced methodologies will be employed. Engaging experts through the Delphi method will gather diverse perspectives, clarify challenges, and establish consensus on integration themes. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis will help select projects for in-depth analysis and Advanced linear and nonlinear regression models will unveil correlations and patterns in NBS-DT convergence, forming a foundation for evidence-based decision-making. By combining these diverse approaches with a focus on NBS-DT integration in European urban planning, BUSEECO aims to elevate sustainable urban development. Prof. Santiago is well-suited to guide BUSEECO from the perspective of Science and Technology Studies (STS). USAL's track record in hosting Marie Curie fellows and proficiency in project management ensure a supportive research environment. BUSEECO will advance my career by providing me with multidisciplinary skills and training, especially in the STS field. It aligns with the European Horizon framework and aspires to establish sustainable urban ecosystems for Castile and León.
