High-temperature oxygen batteries for Industrial Internet of Things

Objetivo

The project OxyBatt addresses a pressing need for portable energy storage in the intermediate temperature range. Currently, no battery technology is capable to operate between 200 ºC and 400 ºC, due to issues related to performance degradation and safety concerns of commercial systems. This limitation has a substantial impact on the penetration of industrial internet-of-things solutions in energy-intensive industries, where high temperature and risk of explosions are common, and hinders the application of advanced predictive maintenance and safety tools. OxyBatt will cover such a critical gap by offering a new battery product, built upon an innovative technology for a thin-film rechargeable system that utilizes oxygen storage. Unlike conventional commercial batteries, the system is inherently safe and thermally stable, making it well-suited for use in hazardous environments at high temperatures. The core technology behind OxyBatt has no reliance on scarce elements such as Co and Li, which is currently a concern for European Union’s battery ecosystem. Through a user-centered approach, the product will be customized and refined throughout the project in order to be seamlessly integrated and tested in a commercial industrial IoT device. This activity will demonstrate the potential for the OxyBatt device to enter a huge market, namely predictive maintenance in harsh industrial environments, which is inaccessible by current solutions. Complementary co-development and business activities will maximize the potential of the new battery and will establish a clear roadmap for commercialization, including startup creation.
