Project description
Costs and benefits of a vertical farming technology
Vertical farming is a promising technology that addresses the challenges posed by climate change, rising global population, and urbanisation. However, vertical farms are energy-intensive and have specific requirements. The EIC Transition project Super-HEART focused on developing technology and optimising system-level design and control through research on multiport power converters. This EIC-funded Heart4Farms project aims to assess the costs and benefits of the technology developed in Super-HEART for the vertical farming supply system. It will also address the unique characteristics of multi-port power converters, such as high density, low loss, and fault tolerance, which are crucial for meeting the specific application requirements of this technology.
Objective
Vertical farming is a promising technology to address the challenges related to the impact of climate change on agricultural production, the increased demand associated with global population growth, and urbanisation. However, vertical farms are energy-intensive plants with specific requirements. The technology and system-level design and control optimisation developed in the EIC Transition project 'Super-HEART' involves research and development on multiport power converters. Their unique features such as the high density, low loss, and fault tolerance, can address the specific needs of the application. The aim of this project is therefore to provide a systemic and systematic benchmark assessment of the costs and benefits of the technology developed in Super-HEART for the supply of vertical farms.
