With support from the EIC Accelerator, the project aims to advance InnoAerogel from its current Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 to TRL 8 within two years. Achievements to date include:
TRL 1-3: Comprehensive formulation research, feasibility studies, and proof of concept completed, identifying microorganism compatibility with cellulose matrix.
TRL 4: Prototype development, demonstrating high absorption efficiency, reusability, and biodegradability.
TRL 5: Field testing and validation conducted in collaboration with environmental agencies and harbor authorities, confirming performance under real-world conditions.
The EIC grant will support further R&D, pilot testing, and process optimization, culminating in a market-ready solution.
The project’s first-year implementation was structured around four key work packages:
WP1: Project management to TRL6. This work package focused on ensuring effective technical coordination and risk management to support the project's advancement to TRL6. It included the development and implementation of data management strategies, oversight of subcontractor collaboration, and seamless integration of external expertise. Additionally, WP1 encompassed legal, financial, contractual, administrative, and ethical management, ensuring compliance with regulations and efficient project execution.
WP2: Value chain development, communication and dissemination to TRL 6. This work package focused on strengthening the project's market positioning and outreach. It included engagement with material suppliers to ensure a reliable and sustainable value chain, along with market analysis and strategy development to define commercialization pathways. Additionally, WP2 encompassed communication and dissemination activities, promoting project visibility, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge transfer to maximize impact.
WP3: Product adaptation. This work package focused on optimizing the InnoAerogel formulation to enhance its performance and market readiness. Key activities included identifying and evaluating sorbent formulation approaches, characterizing oil-degrading microorganisms, and optimizing their integration within the aerogel matrix. Additionally, WP3 involved developing immobilization techniques to improve microorganism-sorbent interaction and conducting compatibility and stability testing to ensure the final product meets efficiency and durability requirements.
WP4: Planning of pre-industrial scale-up. This work package focussed on preparing for the pre-industrial scale production of InnoAerogel. Key activities include the design and planning of a pre-industrial production plant, ensuring feasibility and scalability. It also covered the procurement of essential equipment and obtaining regulatory permits for the pilot plant, laying the foundation for future large-scale manufacturing.
