Integrative MSCA Achievements and Networks for Unified Strategies

Project description

Mapping research to tackle Europe’s biggest challenges

With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the IANUS project aims to strengthen the links between beneficiaries, researchers and policymakers. It will explore MSCA contributions via large-scale portfolio analysis of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects, using semantic clustering to detect thematic patterns and trends. The study will quantify contributions to Mission Cancer and Mission Smart Cities in terms of researchers, funding and outputs. Surveys and case studies will identify training needs, success stories and best practices to enhance impact, intersectoral cooperation and synergies with EU initiatives. Findings will inform a stakeholder co-designed agent-based model to simulate policy effects. Policy workshops will convert evidence into actionable recommendations, ensuring wide dissemination.

Objective

IANUS aims to maximize the strategic impact of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) on the European Union's Missions and the European Research Area (ERA). The project will conduct a large-scale portfolio analysis of all projects funded under Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, using advanced computational methods to uncover features and patterns across projects that are not identifiable through standard analytical approaches. This analysis will identify thematic clusters, particularly those related to the EU Missions, and estimate the contribution of MSCA projects to these missions. Additionally, the portfolio analysis will explore the evolution of research themes and emerging trends over time, tracking the most significant trajectories.
Building on this analysis, the project will develop pilots for the two largest EU Missions: Mission 2 (Cancer) and Mission 4 (Smart Cities). It will identify projects suitable for survey analysis and pilot in-depth case studies to uncover good practices, success stories, obstacles, and solutions in MSCA projects, particularly regarding researchers' intersectoral cooperation, training, skills development, and ability to address societal challenges, including those covered by the EU Missions. An agent-based model, co-designed with stakeholders, will simulate the large-scale effects of scientists' bottom-up adaptive responses to potential policy interventions in artificial simulation scenarios.
Finally, the results will form the backbone of policy development workshops and events with stakeholders, aimed at developing recommendations to enhance the policy impact of the MSCA, the exploitation of MSCA project results, intersectoral cooperation, and researchers' skills and career development. Through extensive stakeholder engagement and the dissemination of results, the project will ensure broad impact and the sustainability of its outcomes.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
