Insider Threat Management for Critical Infrastructure Cyber-security: A Three-party Game-Theoretic Perspective

Project description

Outsmarting insider threats: game theory meets cybersecurity

As digital systems become more complex and interconnected, the risk of cyberattacks from within is rising. Power grids and other critical systems can be brought down not just by hackers, but by trusted insiders making mistakes, or turning rogue. These insider threats are hard to spot and even harder to stop. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the INSIDER project is using game theory to understand how attackers and defenders interact, and to develop smarter ways to protect microgrids (small, crucial power networks). The research will help spot risks earlier and respond more effectively.

Objective

Dr Gehui Xu will carry out a project focusing on Insider Threat Management for Critical Infrastructure Cyber-security: A Three-party Game-Theoretic Perspective (INSIDER). The impact of insider threats on cyber-security will be studied from a game-theoretic perspective, and effective defense strategies will be developed to identify, assess, and mitigate complex internal-external coordinated attacks. The established theoretical framework will be applied to microgrids, a crucial component of critical infrastructure, providing valuable insights into their security enhancement. This approach aims to establish a close connection between cyber-security and game theory. The project will be carried out with the Control and Power (CAP) Research Group, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Imperial College London (ICL), under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Parisini. As a part of the project, a 3-month secondment will be carried out at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE), University of Cyprus (UCY).

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
