Project description
Developing wireless tandem photoelectrodes for efficient CO2 reduction
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction systems offer a promising means to address climate change by converting captured CO2 into valuable products using solar energy. However, their practical application is hindered by costly materials and production methods, toxicity and unstable photoelectrodes with poor efficiency. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the SCCORE project will use safe earth-abundant materials to design efficient and durable photoelectrodes that can be scaled for industrial applications. As such, it will combine silicon photoanodes with a copper oxide photocathode to create wireless tandem photoelectrode structures with optimal catalysts for bias-free CO2 reduction. The resulting systems may speed up commercialisation of sustainable and affordable PEC cells that exploit renewable energy.
Objective
SCCORE aims to advance the European Green Deal’s goals by developing innovative solutions for CO2 removal. The project focuses on creating a wireless tandem photoelectrode structure that integrates a silicon (Si) photoanode with a copper(I) oxide (Cu2O) photocathode, enhanced by optimized catalysts for bias-free and efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction to ethylene and glycerol oxidation to dihydroxyacetone (DHA). By leveraging interdisciplinary approaches, SCCORE seeks to overcome the limitations of current PEC systems, which are often reliant on unstable, expensive, toxic, and lab-scale photoelectrodes with low efficiency. The project is dedicated to designing cost-effective, stable, and efficient photoelectrodes that absorb the entire solar spectrum, maintain long-term stability, and are scalable for industrial application, all while using earth-abundant and non-CMR materials. This development will be a significant step towards commercializing PEC cells, contributing to the creation of sustainable and economically viable renewable energy technologies.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
