Project description
A new era in kidney care: portable and personal
Most dialysis patients are tied to clinics, facing fatigue, limited mobility, and high healthcare costs. With this in mind, the EIC-funded PORTADIALYS project is developing NeoKidney for home haemodialysis. This is a lightweight, 10 kg device that uses patented sorbent technology. It is designed to reduce water use and cut setup complexity, making home dialysis more accessible. Its portability and independence from electrical grounding even allow use in remote or emergency settings. NeoKidney promises lower mortality, greater autonomy, and annual savings of up to 43 % per patient. With integrated remote monitoring and strong commercial potential, the device is set to reshape the EUR 82 billion dialysis market.
Objective
NextKidney BV, founded in 2014 and based in Netherlands, is revolutionizing kidney care with NeoKidney, a compact, truly portable home hemodialysis (HHD) device. With over 5 million end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients worldwide, most rely on costly, in-clinic dialysis, which limits mobility, increases fatigue, and has sub-optimal health outcomes. HHD offers benefits over in-clinic dialysis, but adoption remains below 2% due to current devices being bulky and challenging to set up. NeoKidney addresses these barriers by offering a 10 kg portable device that uses patented sorbent technology to recycle dialysate, reducing fluid needs from 45 to 5 liters per session. Its innovative cardiac floating technology also eliminates the need for electrical grounding, enabling use in various settings, including remote and disaster zones. Together, these features make NeoKidney more easily accessible to patients.
NeoKidney’s benefits include 40% reduction in mortality, greater patient independence, and healthcare cost savings of up to 43% per patient annually (from €92K to €53K). Integrated remote monitoring allows healthcare providers to track patient data in real time, reducing need for hospital visits.
With global dialysis market valued at €82 billion in 2022, and HHD segment expected to grow to €7 billion by 2035, NeoKidney aims to capture significant market share, with projected sales of €650M annually by 2035. NextKidney's commercialization strategy includes selling both the NeoKidney device and high-margin consumables, with initial market entry in Europe and the U.S.
NextKidney seeks €41.5M in funding, including €2.5M in EIC grants and €39M in equity (€15M from EICA and €24M from current and additional investors), to accelerate clinical trials, regulatory approval, and market penetration. This funding is critical for maintaining NextKidney’s first-mover advantage, ensuring the rapid rollout of this life-changing technology for home hemodialysis patients.
