Precision fermentation and microalgae cultivation can decouple food production from land and climate, producing proteins, fats, vitamins and other nutrients with a fraction of the resource footprint of conventional agriculture. Yet these bioprocesses still operate largely as a "black box": production is steered indirectly through proxies such as oxygen and pH, because no affordable system exists to see and characterise the microorganisms themselves in real time. This gap keeps promising processes stuck in the lab, lowers yields, and leads to frequent batch losses — in some food bioproduction settings up to a fifth of batches are wasted due to a lack of adequate monitoring.
ROLF addresses this gap directly. Holloid is developing a bioprocess monitoring and control platform built on automated, high-throughput in-line holographic microscopy combined with AI-based image analysis. The platform can characterise millions of microorganisms in minutes — capturing size, shape, dynamics and internal structure of individual cells — and turn that into actionable insight delivered over the web. Low-cost sensors and a scalable software service make single-cell-level monitoring accessible to producers of any size.
The project's overall objective is to move this technology from validated prototype (TRL 6) to market-ready product (TRL 8) over 24 months, delivering two major platform releases while building the commercial and financial foundations for scale-up. The work is organised across six areas: project management and investment readiness; monitoring hardware; compliance and software design; software demonstration and machine-learning performance; customer pilots; and commercial market development.
ROLF's pathway to impact is aligned with the EU Farm to Fork Strategy under the European Green Deal: it supports sustainable production and processing methods that cut water, energy and chemical use, and helps prevent food waste by detecting contamination early. By improving the efficiency of precision fermentation, the platform contributes to the EU's wider climate and circular-bioeconomy goals and strengthens Europe's position in sustainable food technology.
