INTEGRATE - Interdisciplinary Network for Training, Education, and Growing Research into Applications of and Therapeutic Expertise around Psychedelics

Project description

A psychedelic path to mental health recovery

For people living with severe depression or PTSD, the search for lasting relief can feel endless. Psychedelic therapy (PT) offers new hope, but it’s still surrounded by unanswered questions and difficult to access. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the INTEGRATE project is training a new generation of doctoral researchers to explore how PT works, set clinical standards, and address legal and ethical barriers. Working closely with universities, healthcare providers and industry, INTEGRATE is preparing skilled professionals to bring safe, effective PTs into real-world mental health care, offering new hope to those who need it most.

Objective

Late-stage clinical trials show that psychedelic therapy (PT) has the potential to revolutionize mental disorder treatments, answering a huge and increasing unmet need. INTEGRATE is a multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral Doctoral Network (DN) for training and educating future leaders/experts in implementation of PT in society and healthcare. Four key challenges are identified: 1) The mechanisms of action of PT remain elusive, 2) Lack of clinical gold standards, 3) Legal, financial, and regulatory obstacles for PT access, and 4) Hype, hope, and ethical challenges. Through interdisciplinary research, training, and collaboration, INTEGRATE aims to advance psychedelic science, optimize treatment protocols, and address ethical and regulatory challenges to improve mental healthcare. It addresses the urgent need for well-trained experts to navigate the complex landscape of PT in healthcare. The project will train 16 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) to become T-shaped professionals, equipped with deep disciplinary knowledge and broad interdisciplinary skills. Through collaborative research, innovative training, and strategic secondments, INTEGRATE will tackle the key challenges in PT research with matching research and innovation objectives. The network brings together leading academic institutions, industry partners, and non-profit organizations across Europe, fostering a collaborative environment for advancing psychedelic science and improving mental healthcare.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
