Italy for Artificial Intelligence

Project description

Italy’s AI factory powers a smarter future for Europe

Building a competitive AI ecosystem in Europe requires cutting-edge infrastructure, strategic vision and cross-border collaboration. With this in mind, the EU-funded IT4LIA project brings all three together. Anchored in Italy, the project’s proposed European AI Factory will leverage the infrastructural assets of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s LEONARDO supercomputer and the Bologna Tecnopolo. The latter is one of Europe’s most advanced hubs for AI and quantum computing and processing big data. Backed by strong national and regional support, and rooted in a strategy launched in 2017, IT4LIA aims to drive innovation, boost AI capabilities and foster growth across the EU. Overall, the project is set to turn Italy into a key engine of Europe’s AI transformation.

Objective

IT4LIA AI Factory will act as a catalyst for the creation and growth of a more competitive AI ecosystem both in Italy and the EU, by leveraging on EUROHPC LEONARDO and TECNOPOLO BOLOGNA infrastructural assets and the rapidly growing AI national ecosystem.
This proposal to establish a European AI Factory in Italy (equipped with an AI-optimized supercomputer) is crucial for nurturing and advancing the vision conceived in 2017, based on a collaborative strategy and a unified commitment at all government levels, including the Italian National Ministry of University and Research and the Emilia Romagna Regional Government, which led to the creation of Bologna Tecnopolo (a hub for supercomputing, big data processing, AI and quantum computing) and to the rapid growth of the national ecosystem. The strong support from the European Union EuroHPC played a key role in the success of this strategy.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
