PREVENT AND BYPASS - A VISION TO PROTECT BLOOD CELLS FROM ADVERSE IMMUNE RESPONSES

Objective

PROTECT: Advancing Blood Cell Protection from Immune Attack
This ERC Advanced Grant project, PROTECT, aims to overcome challenges in preventing adverse immune responses against blood cells induced by essential medical interventions: vaccination, transfusion, and thrombosis prophylaxis. Despite their life-saving potential, these therapies can trigger rare but severe complications due to antibody-mediated immune activation.
PROTECT addresses this through two interconnected challenges: PREVENT, focusing on adenovirus vector vaccine safety by elucidating the mechanisms behind vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT); and BYPASS, aiming to enable safe transfusions for immunized patients by enzymatically removing antigenic proteins from donor blood cells.
PREVENT will investigate the specific adenoviral components triggering the anti-PF4 response, utilizing advanced proteomics, genetics, and humanized mouse models. BYPASS will leverage innovative enzyme engineering and targeted protein degradation to modify blood products in situ, offering a paradigm shift in transfusion medicine.
By integrating mechanistic insights with translational approaches, PROTECT strives to develop preventative and corrective strategies, ultimately preserving public trust in life-saving medical practices and establishing a unique human model system for alloimmunization research. This ambitious program promises high-gain potential with lasting impact on patient care and blood product safety.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
