Objective
The SOLOSAFE project aims to develop an AI-enabled smart jacket to enhance personal safety, particularly for individuals travelling alone at night or in isolated or potentially high-risk environments. The project addresses the limitations of existing personal safety devices, which often depend on manual activation and may not respond effectively during sudden or unexpected incidents. SOLOSAFE will combine intelligent textile-based sensing, wearable electronics, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and machine learning to enable real-time detection of potentially threatening physical activities. The smart jacket will integrate multiple wearable sensing technologies, including fabric-based stretch and pressure sensors, inertial measurement units (IMU sensing, to capture body movements and activity patterns. These multimodal signals will be collected, calibrated and processed to identify characteristic patterns associated with normal activities, sudden movements, grabbing, pushing, aggressive gestures and other potentially violent situations. Machine learning and feature-engineering techniques will then be developed and evaluated to distinguish normal and potentially threatening activities with high accuracy and low false-positive rates. The project targets an accuracy above 95% and an F1-score above 90%. The research will involve sensor selection, hardware tuning, calibration, multimodal data acquisition, dataset development, feature extraction, machine learning model development and validation under controlled and real-world-oriented conditions. Approximately 50 voluntary participants will contribute to controlled movement and simulated activity trials, with gender-balanced representation to evaluate the robustness and fairness of the developed models. The system will provide automated, non-harmful safety alerts based on detected patterns rather than relying on manual activation.
Through collaboration between the University of Malta and the University of West Attica, the project will combine expertise in artificial intelligence, wearable sensing, IoT, signal processing and smart systems. SOLOSAFE will contribute to the development of reliable, privacy-conscious and scalable wearable safety technology, while generating new knowledge, research datasets, publications and opportunities for future translation into practical personal-safety applications.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
