Artificial Intelligence for Joint Communication and SENSing in Optical NEtworks

Objective

Optical networks are crucial to modern society and the economy, forming the backbone of our advanced communication infrastructure. Currently, these networks are undergoing a transformative phase, driven by the demands – and needs – of increased and everywhere connectivity and real-time data acquisition for monitoring and performance enhancement. Both demands lead to system architectures that have the potential to be exploited in other contexts, thereby leveraging considerable value from the significant costs of installation. In particular, there is the potential to transform the telecommunications network into a globe-spanning distributed sensing system with applications ranging from earthquake, tsunami, and fires detection to infrastructure monitoring.

Recent developments in the field highlighted the potential of integrating high-speed optical communication with distributed sensing, offering an ambitious holistic approach to data acquisition, monitoring and analysis. This integration promises to enhance the intelligent functionalities of ubiquitous optical networks, pushing the boundaries of what is achievable with traditional optical communications.

The Doctoral Network AI-Sense (Artificial Intelligence for Joint Communication and SENSing in Optical NEtworks) brings together internationally leading teams from academia, start-up Enlightra and global telecom industry players, including Nokia Germany and Portugal, Nokia Networks France, and ADTRAN to train a cohort of 14 DCs in the emerging area of joint optical communication with distributed sensing, incorporating artificial intelligence/machine learning methods for enhanced real-time data collection and analytics. The industrial partners involvement in the project provides DCs access to invaluable resources, expertise, and technologies. AI-Sense has the ambition and the vision to create a new generation of scientific and industrial leaders, strengthening Europe’s competitiveness.
