Objective
SENSE identifies gaps in perception systems and observes international CCAM developments for wider alignment. A series of Operational Design Domains (ODDs), along with scenarios for passenger and freight use cases, are designed to provide context for the SENSE perception systems. Cooperative edge AI-computing architectures are designed to address computational requirements and cooperation and connectivity challenges between vehicle and infrastructure. The ODDs and architectures are verified against social, ethical, and legal needs, while a monitoring and evaluation framework is defined for a standardised assessment. State-of-the-art developments are launched with the advancement of sense-think-control-act algorithms for perception systems to detect and securely respond to on-site early warnings in complex environments involving different types of AMUs, low-speeds, construction sites, variable weather and illumination conditions. Modules are developed for effective disruptions management, and vehicle teleoperations are advanced to safely operate vehicles remotely. Cooperative architectures, operational and tactical algorithms, edge AI-computing, and communication protocols are advanced for reduced computational power. Software, hardware, and V2X protocols are reassessed to enhance energy-efficiency, cyber-security, modularity, and upgradability. SENSE prototypes are deployed in 4 real-life complex environments across Europe: an autonomous testbed (TUM), a complex urban intersection in Munich (DE), an urban space with bus depots and parking areas in Metropolia GZM (PL), and an industrial area in Brienon-sur-Armançon (FR). The prototypes are validated against their reliability, energy efficiency, upgradability potentials, modularity, and circularity. Standards recommendations, scalable deployment plans, investment briefs and circularity protocols are prepared to attract stakeholders, accelerate future deployments and contribute to European and International standards.
